In response to the plethora of issues facing pharma, including the current patent cliff, R&D productivity and changing regulatory/reimbursement situations, pharma is increasingly looking to revamp strategies and the business models underpinning these.
As a result of these issues, Pharma corporate venture funds have seen their activity and importance increase dramatically, becoming a key strategic lever to bringing in external innovation in the absence of much of the traditional VC investment seen in the past.
Previously, the majority of CVC funds have operated on the goal of purely financial returns, with exposure to potentially strategic technologies as a distant secondary focus. With such a crucial role to play in the reinvigoration of R&D pipelines, the extent to which these funds will become more strategic about which technologies, process improvements, product ideas and indications they target is being questioned.
The days of a pharmaceutical company as a pure play may well be numbered. This panel will feature the perspectives of industry leading CVC funds addressing their views on how the scene is set to evolve in the coming years and implications for both early stage biotech funding and pharma R&D pipelines.
- Big pharma’s opinion as project executors and investors
- The strategic nature of CVC funds
- Reasoning for each and justification
- Impact this has on the market and long term effects
- Contrasting regional CVC strategies and impacts
- To what extent CVCs are really independent to parent Pharma
- What this means for biotech seeking funding
- The changing attitudes and how CVC involvement is set to evolve in the coming 5 years
