9:10 Keynote opening address: Fixing R&D: Where will the innovation come from and the radical changes necessary to sustain the pharmaceutical industry
Thomas Senderovitz, EVP Compound Development & Branding, Grunenthal
Recent years have seen worrisome trends toward the commoditisation of the drug industry: fewer new drugs, fewer clinical trials, and the growing reliance on generic drugs, which now meet nearly 80% of patient needs in the United States.

Yet, enormous resources remain dedicated to pharmaceutical innovation: tens of thousands of scientists, over $125 billion in annual R&D spending for the industry alone, and a vast pool of cutting edge knowledge and technologies produced by publicly-funded research. The ingredients of success are there, but the recipe -- the way in which they are marshalled by the pharma innovation model -- is no longer dependable.

This high-level presentation delivers a provocative view on attempts to formulate new recipes to rekindle breakthrough innovation.
  • Creating the right envoironment for creativity, motivation and performance
  • Open Innovaiton - from buzz word to reality
  • Should we be focusing on molecules only?
  • What do patients want - and why we need to know this!
