Orphan Drugs: Commercialization, Clinical and Regulatory Challenges
Are orphan drugs the next act for big pharma? It’s beginning to look that way, based on big pharma’s 70% market share in 2009 for rare and genetically inherited diseases, up from a little over 50% three years earlier. But successfully competing in this space requires different strategies and skills than those necessary for blockbuster drug development. Jon Norris’s M&A Analysis: More Structured Deals, Quicker Exits in Biotech
Jon Norris, Managing Director, SVB Capital, conducted research on the merger and acquisition behavior of private, venture capital-backed biotech and medical device companies since 2005 and found some surprising results. Among the findings were the fact that in terms of device activity and deal size, both total acquisition and all-in/upfront amounts are on the rise in device. Norris and his team also found that in biotech exits are quicker and multiples are lower, while in medical devices exits are longer and multiples are higher. Listen to this exclusive BioNetwork podcast to hear more about Norris and SVB’s findings and what factors account for this shift in M&A activity.

Biotechs: Hear what VC’s and Big Pharma think of your “Perfect Pitch”
Your next partnership might be a handshake away – or rely on a mere 20 minutes. That’s about how long you may get to pitch your company or product to the people with whom you hope to collaborate. And that’s why BioNetwork created “The Perfect Pitch” contest; to serve as an opportunity for small biotechs and other firms looking for investment dollars or partnerships, to pitch in a real-life setting and get quality feedback on what is appealing, what is confusing and whether their pitch could potentially result in gainful partnerships. In this file, you’ll read the actual feedback from judges during last year’s Perfect Pitch contest. You won’t read the pitches themselves, but you’ll read what a panel of experts including David Donabedian, GlaxoSmithKline; Kim Kamdar, Domain Associates LLC; and Gregg Talbert, Eli Lilly & Company, thought about three distinct pitches. And you’ll learn why they would, or would NOT go forward with each company, were this an actual pitch.
