3:05pm Should Consumer Returns Be Treated As A Cost Or Profit Center?
Mark Ferguson, Professor of Technology and Management, Georgia-Tech
No matter what you do with them, consumer returns show up as a cost item on the income statement. Thus, reducing them without adversely affecting the customer experience should be a firm’s primary objective. To help achieve this goal, contracts that align the incentives of the OEMs and the retailers have been explored and tested. Once a product is returned, many firms continue to treat the processing of the returned items as a cost center, where returned units are accumulated into large batches to gain efficiencies in their processing. Recent research has demonstrated that this may not be the best practice, however, if the returned product depreciates quickly. Finally, some best practices of returned product management will be explored.
