Formed in 1985, BARSC continues to deliver an interesting and diverse range of presentations and meetings for the associations’ members as well as playing a key role in representing their interests to national and international government and private organisations.

Remote sensing touches the lives of everyone, whether they know it or not. Satellite data is used routinely across a huge range of applications including; maintaining national safety, mapping city streets and homes (both in two and three dimensions), monitoring global climate change, managing forest, waterways and coasts as well as finding and exploiting natural resources.

The European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC) is a non-profit-making organisation that is devoted to the promotion of the European remote sensing industry.

Since 1989, EARSC has provided its Members technical expertise and policy guidance, and has contributed to establish industry contact with European institutional bodies. In these times of intensified European integration and co-operation, the role of EARSC is becoming increasingly vital. Nowadays we would like to bring the specialized knowledge of EARSC’s members to bear on current European issues. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC®) is a not-for-profit, international voluntary consensus standards organization. OGC members collaboratively develop interface standards, encoding standards and best practices that add value to their location information and geoprocessing software and services.
Businesses, government agencies and research organizations increasingly depend on the Internet for "where" information.
Technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, surveying and mapping, mobile devices with GPS, and sensor webs provide such information, but the information’s value depends on whether or not it can be communicated, integrated and used.
Membership in the OGC gives technology users a unique opportunity to efficiently solve interoperability problems, sharing costs with other user organizations. Technology providers benefit because standards expand their market reach. Providers are also able to share the cost of developing interfaces, and the OGC provides an unparalleled forum to meet new customers and stay at the forefront of a rapidly evolving industry.
