Businesses, government agencies and research organizations increasingly depend on the Internet for "where" information.
Technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, surveying and mapping, mobile devices with GPS, and sensor webs provide such information, but the information’s value depends on whether or not it can be communicated, integrated and used.
Membership in the OGC gives technology users a unique opportunity to efficiently solve interoperability problems, sharing costs with other user organizations. Technology providers benefit because standards expand their market reach. Providers are also able to share the cost of developing interfaces, and the OGC provides an unparalleled forum to meet new customers and stay at the forefront of a rapidly evolving industry.
