In January 2011, Defence Geospatial Intelligence was attended by over 650 heads of geospatial intelligence and GIS technology. At a time where the indsutry has been hit by economic instability, DGI was attended by over 400 military and governmental personnel, proving that it is yet again, THE integral meeting for the GIS community. During summer 2010, the DGI team conducted thorough research with the Geospatial Intelligence Community. We listened to the feedback of our trusted community resulting in some exciting new initiatives to ensure that DGI continued to be the conference of choice for the community. As a result we enlisted the services of some of the leading players in the community to help us make sure that we are delivering the conference to meet the needs of the DGI community.
The Defence Geospatial Intelligence Advisory Boardwas instrumental in shaping the agenda and helping select speakers and panellists. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our speakers, advisory board members, sponsors, exhibitors and attendees.
DGI has firmly established itself as the pillar of the geospatial information community. It is your participation and support which makes this event such a great success.
Below are some of the agenda:
- NEW SPEAKER FOR 2011 - Air Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, Chief of Joint Operations, UK MOD opened the the conference, followed by presentations and case studies from key defence and intelligence officers in USA, Germany, France, Italy, Israel, Finland, Norway, Denmark, The Netherlands and many other countries
- NEW SPEAKER FOR 2011- Steven Grant, International Research Office, Engineer Research and Development Center, US Army Corpsof Engineers gave his latest expertise and experience on effective socio-cultural research.
- NEW SPEAKER FOR 2011 - Keynote address from Major General Tim Cross, General Officer Commanding Theatre Troops, Iraq; commander of all British Army forces in the Iraq War. Maj.Gen. Cross will be focused on the increasing role and importance of geo capabilities in-theatre, and in command and control.
- Panel discussion dedicated to the expansion of GIS capability in every part of the defence operation. Top level representatives from the UK, USA, Germany, France, Italy and Australia will gave you their views, and debate how they see geospatial intelligence moving forward into every aspect of defence operations.
- Michael W. Powers, Technical Director, Geospatial Research and Engineering, US Army gave case study showing how the US Army is taking an integrated and collaborative approach to GIS capability in C4ISR
- Laure Dassonville, Head of Geospatial Department, DGA, MoD, France will be gave a presentation to show how in France they have fused the defence and the environment organisations and the use of GIS capabilities, making great savings on purchasing and running costs.
- LTC Sabato Rainone, Chief, Geospatial Section Information and Security Division – Policy Branch, Italian Defence General Staff brought new ideas, along with an update on geo capability in the Italian forces.
- NEW SPEAKER FOR 2011 - Captain Stephen Malcolm, Royal Navy, UK MoD gave us his account of geo capabilities and strategy in the anti-piracy operations off the coast of Africa.
- NEW SPEAKER FOR 2011 - Keith Mosley & Sgt Anthony Giles, UK MoD presented a case study on how command and control networks in Helmand were effectively enabled with full geospatial capability.
- NEW SPEAKER FOR 2011- For the first time, Brig. Gen. Schmidt-Bleker, Director, Bundeswehr Geoinformation Office (BGIO), Germany is joined the conference to giving us his views on the future of GIS capability, including overviews of his latest 3D terrain mapping, geovision and Meteoc projects.
- Special attention will be paid to how the solution providers are preparing for the future GIS requirements of the defence & national security community. Former head of geo at the Canadian Forces Col (ret) Neil Thompson, Managing Director, WC Group moderated a panel discussion with Stuart Haynes, Director Geographic Centre, UK MoD,Guy Thomas, Science and Technology Advisor, United States Coast Guard, and Bob Weber, Senior Research Analyst, Innovative Analytics & Training.
- NEW SPEAKER FOR 2011 - Jonathan Dingle of Trust Mediation showed us how dispute resolution and mediation works, and in what ways GIS-intelligence can be deployed and employed in dispute resolution involving both governments and commercial entities. Mr. Dingle gave an interesting insight into historic disputes, and be challenged to look at how settlement might then (or even now) be facilitated with different levels or types of GIS intelligence.
- NEW SPEAKER FOR 2011 - Stephen Meekin, Director Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation (DIGO), Australian DoD gave us a fantastic update on the latest developments, new ideas and strategies for geo capabilities in the Australian forces.
- Lt. Col. Babis Paraschou, Chief Geospatial Officer of European Union Force gave a case study practical talk on using oblique & 3D imaging for map production & GIS support in Bosnia.
- NEW SPEAKER FOR 2011 - Gp Capt Steve Thornber, Officer Commanding, The National Imagery Exploitation Centre (JARIC), UK MoD gave us his strategies and vision of the changing role of imagery in decision-making.
- The conference closed with a keynote address from one of DGI’s most popular speakers and supporters Col. John D. Kedar, Formerly Commander, JAGO, UK MoD. Col. Kedar looked back at GIS 20 years to see what has changed and what the future holds.
