8.50 Exceeding the demand to deliver value in a volatile economy
Richard Strollo, Managing Director - South Asia, BDP International
The Mayan calendar predicts that the world will end on the 21st of December 2012 due to a cataclysmic shift in the earth’s poles. Whilst the odds of that happening are beyond even remote, a seismic shift in the global chemical industry has already occurred. In 2009 only two of the world’s ten largest chemical producers were based in emerging markets. By 2020 it is predicted that up to seven of the ten largest companies could be based in the BICME countries. This trend has profound implications for the industry and its value chain partners, particularly logistics service suppliers which can play a vital role in helping make global chemical supply chains faster, safer, more agile and more cost-effective to meet the challenges of this new world order. What does this mean for the global chemical sector, which like most industries today is facing a period of uncertainty and economic volatility? In this session BDP will discuss the key issues facing the global chemical industry: supply chain complexity, compliance with increasingly disparate trade, security and environmental regulations, shifting patterns of production and consumption, continued industry consolidation, supply chain visibility, risk management and ultimately productivity and profitability.
