Evaluating the Pharma Supply Chain in Emerging Markets
According to estimates by IMS Health in October 2010, the global pharmaceutical market is expected to grow 5–7% in value to $880bn in 2011. This is a distinct improvement from industry growth of the 4-5% seen in 2010. However, the IMS predict growth of a whopping 15-17% from the Seventeen IMS defined ‘pharmerging’ countries, in 2011, rising from $170–180bn. Furthermore, the world's third-largest pharmaceutical market is China, which is predicted to grow to more than $50 billion in 2011, a remarkable 25–27%.

Pharma companies told to focus on supply chain issues

Supply chain managers tighten grip on lower tier suppliers
Supply chain managers have been advised to tighten their control on second and third tier suppliers after a major new report highlighted where disruptions in the supply chain are going wrong.

Research carried out by the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) reveals that 85 per cent of global organisations have recorded at least one disruption to their supply chain so far this year, with 40 per cent of these caused from suppliers below immediate vendors.

 

    
WHO joins debate on counterfeit drugs in the supply chain
The World Health Organization (WHO) has weighed in on the debate of how to control pharmaceutical supply chain challenges produced from counterfeit drugs and other avenues across the world.

WHO's working group on SSFFC medicines (substandard, spurious, falsely-labelled, falsified and counterfeit) met at the end of October to draw up a draft resolution, which will be debated at the World Health Assembly in May next year.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for DHL in The Netherlands
Nijmegen, 20 January 2011: DHL Supply Chain’s Contract Manufacturing operation at its Life Sciences & Healthcare Campus in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, has recently successfully undertaken two Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) audits, one with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the second with the Brazilian FDA ANVISA.
