What's New For 2012

Industry Developments

We know that defence budgets being squeezed and there is increasing competition for fewer contracts. As a result acquisition processes are being streamlined to ensure future partnerships are truly two-way.

Where are the opportunities in 2012?

The good news for the soldier modernisation community is that large-scale capital projects are being sidelined in favour of smaller ones that pose less risk. So opportunities still exist in traditional markets where budget for soldier equipment modernisation is being ringfenced including Sweden, Poland, Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Canada, Norway, Israel
and more.

Which new programmes do you need to meet?

In addition new and exciting opportunities continue to be found in new region markets and
their soldier modernisation programmes including Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Oman, Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, India and Turkey to name but a few.

Soldier Programme Manager Feedback

When speaking with programme managers from these nations we found they are having to take new approaches to supplier selection to:

  • Increase efficiency to avoid needless cost
  • Make stronger business cases for the same budget
  • Pursue new solutions from new suppliers in new market sectors

But they are frustrated because they have to:

  • Bear the cost and time of outsourcing R&D when businesses could be doing this themselves
  • Identify partners willing to include end user input from the earliest stage to help them build a strong business case for investment
  • Evaluate kit that is a quick fix and not necessarily interoperable with legacy systems

So, in 2012 the 11th annual Soldier Technology conference will enable national government soldier modernisation programme managers to meet with industry and resolve their challenges through smarter investments and partnerships.
