Through research by TNO Defence, Security and Safety four key themes have been highlighted which need to be addressed to increase the effectiveness of the soldier and increase situational awareness:

  • Operate as a unit: from individual soldier to shared situational awareness
  • Display information based on the soldier’s current task, situation and workload
  • Service-oriented approach to optimize the Network Soldier System performance
  • Dynamic trade-off between information, bandwidth and energy requirements

Short summary of the TNO research:

Soldiers have more and more access to information, which in combination with modern communication systems allow close co-operation. The approach however has two major drawbacks:

  1. Information overload on the soldier
  2. Communication overload in the network

The research has addressed a new concept of information sharing. A context sensitive approach in Human Machine Interface will only show information relevant to the soldier at that very moment. By minimizing the time to spend to interpret the display and by assuring him he has the right information, the workload of the soldier is significantly reduced. By having this context sensitive approach also on the transmitter side, communication can greatly be reduced, the freed capacity being used as a free route for high proirity messages that build system confidence at the soldier.
