8:15 Morning Keynote Presentation: Models. Behaving. Badly. Why Confusing Illusion With Reality Can Lead To Disaster, On Wall Street And In Life
Emanuel Derman, Author and Professor, Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department, Columbia University
Quants, physicists working on Wall Street as quantitative analysts, have been widely blamed for triggering financial crises with their complex mathematical models. Their formulas were meant to allow Wall Street to prosper without risk. Though such models imitate the style of physics and employ the language of mathematics, theories in physics aim for a description of reality— but in finance, models can shoot only for a very limited approximation of reality. Emanuel Derman is one of the financial engineers whose mathematical models became crucial for Wall Street during his days at Goldman Sachs. In this session, he shares how we can mend today’s broken models to generate alpha in current markets.

9:05 Panel: Improving Trade Performance By Establishing Best Practices For Dark Pool Trading & Venue Selection
Derrick Chan, Vice President, Product Development, Fidelity Capital Markets
Richard Johnson, Head of Quantitative Electronic Services, Americas, Société Générale
David Margulies, Head of Electronic Products Group, Weeden & Co.

With a dozen exchanges and more than 40 different ATSs in the market, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to source viable liquidity and find the best trading venue. This panel of the industry’s top market experts explores:
  • How can you determine the appropriate venue and industry sector in today’s fragmented market?
  • What are the best methods for selecting a dark pool that best corresponds with your trading tactics?
  • What criteria should you consider when narrowing down your dark pool venues?
  • How can you judge the purity or toxicity of a dark pool before it drastically affects your trade performance?
  • What are the less obvious factors you need to consider in the broker-neutral vs. broker-sponsored dark book debate?

Haim Bodek, Managing Principal, Haim Bodek Consulting, LLC
Haim Bodek gained rare insight during his time at Trading Machines, a high frequency options trading firm that executed upwards of a half percent of the US options market. It was brought to Haim’s attention that exchanges were sharing special order types (i.e. hide not slide, queue jumping) that put traditional investors at a disadvantage. Now he’s using that insight to radically change the financial environment where he developed his trade.
